(s)ex-vangelical

Noun. Defined as:

  • An ex-member of the evangelical tradition in the Christian Church, in which “remaining sexually pure” seemed to be the main focus for girls.

  • A sexually active adult who developed kinks specifically drawn from the sexual restriction of her childhood.

  • A stage play that may shock you. But it’s funny.

  • Sophie grew up going to church in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon. She was an active member of youth group, sang on the worship team, and basically every week attempted to convert her secular friends to Christianity.

She was FULLY committed to being a good Christian girl. So committed that she designed her own purity ring, never dated in high school, and even called God by a special name to show Him how much she loved Him. Yes- Sophie got on her knees every night and prayed to “Daddy.”

(S)ex-vangelical is a storytelling play written by Sophie Moshofsky that explores growing up in purity culture, leaving the church, and learning to think for yourself. It is currently in development.
